Trump Administration’s early start to refugee ban risks lives, betray American values and undermine U.S. leadership
Refugees and families waiting to be reunited with loved ones now face more uncertainty as the Trump administration’s refugee ban went into effect late Tuesday night, ahead of the initial effective date from President Trump’s executive order on Monday. On Wednesday morning, the State Department began implementing the ban, canceling flights for refugees who were already vetted by the U.S. government and had travel booked before January 27th.
As leaders who have experienced forced displacement and some who have been separated from families, Refugee Congress denounces not only the indefinite ban on refugee admissions, but also the betrayal of trust and hope for those who were initially approved for arrival and resettlement before the executive order’s effective date. Not only does this action betray American values of welcome, but it also undermines the integrity of American leadership as a nation committed to protecting our most vulnerable neighbors.
“Our nation prides itself on being one of welcome and compassion. This decision deeply affects countless families and individuals who have already made plans for their future—how they will support their loved ones upon arrival, connect with new neighbors, and contribute to their communities. My thoughts are with the refugees whose families will bear the burden of this change. As advocates and leaders, we must strengthen our efforts and raise our voices louder than ever,” said Halima Hamud, Honorary Delegate.
"Risking the futures of hundreds of refugees who have been waiting in the UNHCR and USRAP pipeline by canceling their flights is not only against American values, but also sends the wrong message to the free world,” said Ali Tarokh, Associate Delegate.
"The cancellation of flights for refugees who were already approved to travel highlights the human cost of policies that disregard individual lives. Refugees are often fleeing unimaginable circumstances, and for many, these flights represent not just hope, but survival. We urge decision-makers to honor commitments made to those seeking safety and a chance to rebuild their lives,” said Sara Deewa, Delegate for New Mexico.
"To learn about the cancellation of refugee travel arrangements is deeply concerning. These actions disrupt lives and undermine the commitments made to those seeking safety and new beginnings. We urge a reconsideration of these measures to uphold the values of compassion and support for refugees,” said Ifeanyi Chimezie, Delegate for Alabama.
"I am deeply disheartened by the abrupt cancellation of refugee travel bookings, disrupting their long-awaited chance for safety and stability. This decision shatters the hope of countless vulnerable individuals and families who had already endured unimaginable hardships, leaving them in limbo once again," said Aisha Koroma, Delegate for Washington DC.
"It is deeply disappointing to witness the cancellation of flights for refugees- our allies and future Americans- who were already on their way and could have arrived before the travel ban deadline. Stranding these individuals in such a manner is not reflective of the American values of compassion and care for our own. I urge our leaders to reconsider this course of action,” said Alimas Hussein, Delegate for Northern California.
“As a refugee, I know firsthand how heartbreaking and exhausting it is to wait in second and third countries, facing endless struggles, uncertainty, and emotional strain. For Afghan refugees, many of whom risked their lives to help the U.S., the sudden cancellation of flights to safety feels like a devastating betrayal. These individuals believed in the promise that those who supported the U.S. would be protected, yet now they face further delays, fear, and insecurity in countries where they are already vulnerable,” said Sateza Safi, Delegate for Oklahoma. “Families who had packed their bags, prepared their children, and braced themselves for the journey to a safe future are now left stranded. Many resettlement agencies have already confirmed the cancellations, leaving refugees in limbo with no clear timeline or resolution. Refugees are not just numbers on a list, they are parents, children, and individuals with hopes and dreams. It’s time to uphold the promises made to them and ensure that they are given the chance to rebuild their lives in safety and peace.”
